Red Lizard was started in 1996, although I suppose it's true origins date further back to Japan
in the early nineties, at which time it was known as the Dark Horse Theatre Group that operated
out of Kyoto, Japan.
Initially, the idea had been to create a production company that would raise money for its
productions by offering classes in acting and improvisation. All the artists would have the
option of being full partners, and as such, would share in the box office returns, while
anything left over would be used to fund future productions. The company's unfortunately,
short life had nothing to do with a lack of success, as it was in fact the first theatre
production I ever worked on where we actually managed to turn a profit, but more the result
of Japan's declining economy and my own departure from Japan.
In it's most recent incarnation as "Red Lizard", the focus has shifted from theatre toward film
and the recent emergence of films online. Instead of offering classes, Red Lizard now finances
it's projects by offering it's services as a graphics company, designing
web sites, logos
and business cards.
Red Lizard's first project will be a feature length film based on an original screenplay I have
written entitled, "Living In Exile."
The plot is semi-autobiographical as it concerns a group of Americans living overseas in Japan
in the early nineties. Production will begin with shooting a short film based on one portion of
the screenplay. This film will then be sent around to festivals in the hopes that it might
generate interest in a full length film. At this time, future film projects include a
historical western, and what can best be described as a gothic fairytale set in America in
the late 1950's.
Red Lizard is concerned with the fact that there is an earlier generation of filmmakers out there,
whose numbers are slowly dwindling. It is our belief that these forefathers of film have a certain
wisdom and knowledge from their own experience of working in the industry to impart onto the next
generation of filmmakers , which is the reason we have set up the
Interviews Page. In the future, you can expect to read interviews
that will include, but not necessarily limited to, people who have worked in nearly every facet of
the film industry. If you perhaps know someone who would be interested in being interviewed,
by all means, let us know.
If you feel as passionate about film as we do, and are interested in supporting the growing independent
film industry we hope that you would consider turning some of your business our way.
Who knows, with the money we make from your business could spring the next award winning film.
